The Boy Who Almost Didn't Make It
Kim Sun-woo—Sunoo—was born on June 24, 2003, in Suwon, South Korea. He grew up as a bright, energetic kid who loved making people smile. He wasn't raised in Seoul's entertainment district. He didn't train at prestigious academies. He lived a relatively normal life until 2019, when, at age 16, he passed Big Hit Entertainment's audition and became a trainee. His training period was short—just 10 months before I-LAND began filming. By the time the show premiered on June 26, 2020, Sunoo was still raw, still learning, still figuring out who he was as a performer.
Sunoo started I-LAND in Ground, the lower tier. He wasn't the strongest dancer. He wasn't the most technically skilled vocalist. But he had something that couldn't be taught: a magnetic personality that made people feel happy just by being around him. Throughout I-LAND, Sunoo faced constant uncertainty. He was eliminated, brought back by producers, eliminated again, and saved by viewer votes. The emotional toll was immense. In one episode, Sunoo broke down crying, overwhelmed by the pressure and the fear of being sent home. But every time he was knocked down, he got back up.
What kept Sunoo in the competition wasn't just his improving skills—it was his ability to connect with people. Viewers loved him. His genuine reactions, his bright smile, his unfiltered emotions—they resonated deeply with audiences. Fan communities rallied around him, voting to keep him in the competition. On September 18, 2020, Sunoo placed seventh in the finale with 985,327 votes, securing the final spot in ENHYPEN. He had made it by the smallest margin, but he had made it. The boy who almost didn't debut became one of the most beloved members of the group.
