The Boy Who Won First Place
Yang Jung-won was born on February 9, 2004, in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up as a thoughtful, observant child with a natural inclination toward leadership. Before joining Big Hit Entertainment in 2019, Jungwon had briefly trained at another entertainment company, gaining foundational skills in singing and dancing. But it was at Big Hit, at age 15, that his potential truly began to unfold. He trained for approximately one year and three months before I-LAND began filming—a relatively short period compared to industry standards.
When I-LAND premiered on June 26, 2020, Jungwon stood out not for flashy charisma or overwhelming talent, but for something subtler: consistency, intelligence, and an innate sense of responsibility. Throughout the show, producers and fellow trainees repeatedly noted Jungwon's maturity. He didn't dominate conversations, but when he spoke, people listened. He didn't seek the spotlight, but he consistently delivered strong performances. He mediated conflicts, offered encouragement to struggling trainees, and demonstrated a level of emotional intelligence rare for someone his age.
On September 18, 2020, the I-LAND finale arrived. Jungwon placed first with 1,417,620 votes—the highest vote count of all finalists. It wasn't just a victory; it was a mandate. Viewers had recognized what producers already knew: Jungwon was the natural center of the group. At 16 years old, he would become ENHYPEN's leader—one of the youngest leaders in fourth-generation K-pop history. The responsibility was immense, but Jungwon was ready.
