From Seattle to Seoul: The Journey Begins
Park Jong-seong was born on April 20, 2002, in Seattle, Washington, where he grew up surrounded by the Pacific Northwest's diverse music scene. He was a Korean-American kid who loved music, particularly influenced by American R&B and pop artists. But at age 15, in 2017, Jay made a decision that would change his life forever: he left his home, his friends, and the comfort of his American upbringing to move to South Korea alone to pursue a career in K-pop.
The transition was not easy. Beyond the obvious language barrier, Jay had to adapt to an entirely different culture, education system, and entertainment industry training regimen. In interviews, he has spoken about the loneliness and culture shock of those early days. "I had to learn everything from scratch—the language, the culture, even how to train properly," he reflected. Yet this challenge became his fuel. Jay threw himself into training, determined to prove that his sacrifice would not be in vain.
By the time I-LAND came around in 2020, Jay had been training for nearly three years. He had transformed from a Seattle teenager with a dream into a skilled vocalist and dancer fluent in both Korean and the demanding culture of K-pop training. His bicultural background—American confidence combined with Korean work ethic—would become one of his greatest strengths.
